Canadian Nutrition Society Meeting 2020 recognizes BCDRN researchers

The Canadian Nutrition Society 2020 (CNS) meeting scheduled for May 4-7, 2020 was not held in Edmonton as planned. Instead, the CNS held four days of online sessions including their annual trainee poster and infographic competition. Congratulations to the CNS organizing committee for their success bringing together Canadian nutrition researchers from coast to coast during uncertain times.

Congratulations to BC Diabetes Research Network’s Post Doctoral Fellow Dr Alejandra Wiedeman and Masters graduate Cynthia Ramirez from the University of British Columbia. They are both part of Dr Angela Devlin and Dr Dina Panagiotopoulos research teams at the BC Children’s Hospital and they work collaboratively on translational research projects.

CNS PUBLICATION AWARD FOR NUTRITION TRANSLATION (Theme: Mental Health)

Awardee: Alejandra M Wiedeman, PhD, Constadina Panagiotopoulos, MD, FRCPC, Angela M. Devlin, PhD, University of British Columbia, Vancouver

The role of lifestyle in mitigating treatment-related weight gain and metabolic complications in children with mental health conditions

The Publication Award for Nutrition Translation is shared this year with three outstanding recipients. The winners have been selected for development towards a review paper that will be published in a future issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM), following the journal’s established peer-review process.

CNS 2020 POSTER COMPETITION

Finalist: Cynthia Yamilka Ramirez Contreras, University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Repeated neonatal oral sucrose treatment affects growth and alters insulin-like growth factor and liver choline metabolism in mice.

Cynthia is working towards her Canadian Registered Dietitian designation and recently defended her thesis for her Masters in Experimental Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Devlin, UBC Department of Pediatrics.

1st Place: Kelsey Cochrane, RD, University of British Columbia, Vancouver

We would also like to highlight another outstanding awardee from the University of British Columbia. Congratulations to Kelsey Cochrane who was awarded first place for the Infographic Awards. Kelsey is a Registered Dietitian currently working towards a PhD in Human Nutrition under the supervision of Dr. Karakochuk in the UBC School of Land and Food Systems.
