Alberta-British Columbia Islet Workshop 2019

Alberta-British Columbia Islet Workshop 2019

The Alberta-British Columbia Islet Workshop (A-BC) celebrated its 8th year at Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon BC, from February 13-16, 2019. This inter-provincial meeting brought together islet enthusiasts for three days of science and mountain activities. This meeting has grown to become a must-attend for islet researchers and their trainees from across Canada. The meeting is a highlight for many islet scientists due to its size and islet focus.

This year A-BC attracted attendees from both the USA and Canada with delegates coming from Indiana, California, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. The meeting featured two invited speakers; Drs. Carmella Evans-Molina (Indiana University) and Jonathan Schertzer (McMaster University).

In addition to oral presentations from the academic diabetes research teams the event brought in two experts in their fields to deliver keynote addresses:

Dr. Carmela Evans-Molina, Indiana School of Medicine

presentation,

Mechanisms of β cell Stress in Diabetes:  Insights from a Trip to the ER

Dr. Jonathan Schertzer, McMaster University

Metabolic stress sensors propagate inflammatory lipolysis and myopathy:

Can fat and muscle inform islet responses?

The A-BC Iset Workshop would not be possible without the continued support from the University of British Columbia’s BC Diabetes Research Network, the University of Alberta’s Alberta Diabetes Institute & Alberta Diabetes Foundation, the BC Children’s Hospital’s Canucks for Kids Fund Childhood Diabetes Laboratories. We are grateful to our corporate sponsors; Alpco, Mercodia, and Nanostring Technologies and Bio-Rad and Meso Scale Discovery. We are grateful to all the trainees who prepared and delivered their abstracts to the islet research community.

Join us in February 2020 for the next Alberta British Columbia Islet Workshop.
